In the modern imaginary, trains have always been a symbol of forward motion. The question now is whether our trains take us into a future of power and speed, or rust and decay.
A wonderful surprise to see a whole issue of Damage Magazine on trains, a mass technology in which, along with millions, I have quite an interest. As a child in middle chool in Toronto, Canada we used to ride our coaster brake bikes to the train yards in the Junction neighborhood in order to play in the mothballed old steam engines rusting there. There were also passenger cars and people lived in them. A whole world of interesting factory lots and railway spurs.
